A Handy Tool for Teachers

This book is a practical resource guide for teachers on how to teach vocabulary in the English classroom. In addition to discussing pedagogical techniques and providing much sensible advice and ideas, it also includes learning activities and reproducible worksheets for teachers to adapt or use. This will be a good tool for teaching vocabulary, whether for the trainee or veteran teacher.

I heard Nicholas J. Webb speak on August 30, 2003. His message is compelling. No more free rides on our health care system - it's on it way out. Be responsible or be vulnerable to the "bottom line" mentality of a broken health care system.
I'm ordering extra copies to get the word out to my family, friends and business associates.

Important topic

The healthcare industry needs an overhaul but not only because medicine and procedures don't heal disease but because people want them to rather than realizing that the only way to be healthy is to eat and live for health. The healthcare industry will never do what people who are addicted to unhealthy lifestyles want it to do. If anything the industry encourages lifestyle choices that keep us sick and in need of their products, prescription drugs and surgeries which never address the underlying causes of diseases.

Nice title, good premise, nothing new

This is a well reasearched, documented book that is now dated, but the facts still pretty much remain the same. Basically we are killing ourselves by our life styles, and besides that, we are going to make our health care programs impossible and so expensive most won't be able to afford them. The author spends little time belittling people for smoking (but he does cover it briefly); he basically says we have choices in our life styles, and we are not making good ones, so we are all getting fat, creating big health problems (like diabetes, heart, and cancer problems). If we would do three things, we would be fine: eat sensibly, take some vitamin supplements, and get some exercise (well, also get enough sleep and don't overstress). It's as simple as that.

We get the media we deserve

"We get the media we deserve," declares NPR's Brooke Gladstone in her excellent The Influencing Machine, an insightful graphic manifesto that sits comfortably alongside Neil Postman's Amusing Ourselves to Death: Public Discourse in the Age of Show Business and Jaron Lanier's You Are Not a Gadget: A Manifesto (Vintage), both of whom make cameo appearances.

Gladstone, aided by Josh Neufeld's seamless visuals, makes a compelling case that the ills that plague media today -- mass and social -- are nothing new, that "we've been here before: the incivility, the inanities, the obsessions, the broken business models. In fact, it's been far worse and the Republic survives."

What follows is a broad, contextual overview of the history of media, recounted with a healthy sense of humor, and a refreshing undertone of optimism. eg: Near the end of the book, in two pages, she covers Ray Kurzweil and the Singularity, Lanier's skepticism, Planet of the Apes and Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs... and it all makes sense!

"Graphic non-fiction" is a tricky format to pull off and not to everyone's taste, but Neufeld does a great job complementing Gladstone without letting the medium overshadow her message, and any student of media, formally or arm-chair, should read The Influencing Machine without hesitation.

Kudos to W.W. Norton for taking a chance on such an innovative book, though it's rather disappointing that the publisher of Frank Rose's excellent The Art of Immersion: How the Digital Generation Is Remaking Hollywood, Madison Avenue, and the Way We Tell Stories has zero online presence for it. A missed opportunity, but one that should be easily (and quickly) rectified.

We define the media, thus the media defines us

In this engaging & thought provoking graphic non-fiction novel Brooke Gladstone aims to dismantle the idea that media is an evil, disembodied influencing machine that controls our minds. She argues instead that the media is like a "mess of mirrors" many distorted, yet largely reflecting us. She argues that our role as consumers of news media is an important & engaging one. We as consumers, patriots and morally guided citizens must play an active role in our media consumption by reporting injustices or misinformation. Modern technology, she argues, has given us a plethora of choice in regard to what type of channel we choose to disseminate the news for us. Modern technology has also created a global village, as predicted by Marshall Mcluhan, and in this global village we have access to news, information, and opinion from around the world. With this greater access comes greater responsibility. News from across the globe matters, and in a sense becomes local because it is so accessible and, we are now further able to act (charitably) with the same ease in which we search for the news. We are being tested morally by the newest information technology, and it is our responsibility to reflect upon the media a moral and civil-minded person so that we may receive a more productive type of news from the media.

Gladstone develops her ideas beginning with the birth of writing & its intrinsic power which is quickly realized by the state & the divine right who act to prohibit, screen and repress it and its scribes. Next, thanks to Gutenberg comes the printing press which greatly extends the reach & girth of information to the people which, then gives way to the increased desire of government to repress it. Gladstone then illustrates, literally & figuratively, key presidents and how they, during times of war & peace acted to prohibit the freedom of information. George Washington was the precursor for those presidents who acted to have the news disseminated "the president's way." Contrary to Washington is Thomas Jefferson, who though he derided the "putrid state" of newspapers, unfailingly defended the freedom of the press even beyond his presidency.

By highlighting the course of media prior to TV & the internet Gladstone aims to make the point that. "Everything we hate about the media today was present at its creation."

With the advent of TV people begin to experience the media differently. It is supposed that the medium of TV exposed Senator McCarthy's black-listing trials for the monstrous thing they were, leading newsman Edward R. Murrow to denounce McCarthy, thereby influencing the discerning viewing public in such as way as to effectively shelve McCarthy.

Gladstone affectively argues that the role of media is to expose injustice and fraud. The media gives us a "record of executive corruption." We have the media to thank for exposing Watergate and thereby showing citizens that our presidents are not faultless nor are they immune to punitive justice or the moral outrage of the people.

Gladstone also includes ideas of media pundits over the last 60 years. She reflects the ideas of Marshal Mcluhan in her statement that. "Obviously, people make things, but less obviously, things also make people." She references Nicholas Carr and his question of whether technology is making us stupid and she refutes it. We evolve with technology, and that is not bad. The real danger is becoming passive to it. Our "cognitive styles" may be changing but we are not in danger of becoming stupid. A wise person once said to me, "Tell me what you yearn for and I'll tell you who you are." Though I do not think that it's Ms. Gladstone's intent to add to our national alarm, she does hold the mirror up to the public, so that we can see more clearly what we yearn for and who we are. Looking at the Media as a mirror, in these times, is important. Brooke Gladstone invites us to understand that, "The fault, dear [Public], is not in our stars, But in ourselves." (Julius Caesar).

The Influencing Machine: Brooke Gladstone on the Media is an invitation for us to make positive change. Because how can we change what we loath, for the better, if we can not see that so much of what we see and hear in the Media is a reflection of ourselves, and thus, we have the power to change that which belongs to us. As long as we continue to think it's "them" and expect "them" to change, we are powerless.

Ms. Gladstone makes a truly important and an awakening statement with her deep insights about our relationship with "our" media; about how what we engage with in our Media reflects who we are, and how our yearning for what we engage with tells us a great deal about who we are; about the how and what we live for. It forces the question: "Where must I be at, to be thinking, this, engaging with this?"

About the Author

Alistair MacLean, the son of a Scots minister, was brought up in the Scottish Highlands. In 1941 he joined the Royal Navy. After the war he read English at Glasgow University and became a schoolmaster. The two and a half years he spent aboard a wartime cruiser were to give him the background for HMS Ulysses, his remarkably successful first novel, published in 1955. He is now recognized as one of the outstanding popular writers of the 20th century, the author of 29 worldwide bestsellers, many of which have been filmed.

Short Stories from a Master Storyteller...

Alistair Maclean published 28 adventure novels in his working lifetime, many of them bestsellers. The most enduring of his titles may be "The Guns of Navarone" and "Where Eagles Dare", thanks in part to successful movie adaptations. Readers may therefore be surprised to know that MacLean actually cut his teeth as an author on short stories. The first item in 1985's "The Lonely Sea" is a short story that won a newpaper competition in 1954 and launched the former Royal Navy sailor and school teacher on a professional writing career.

The stories in "The Lonely Sea" cover a wide gamut of plots whose connecting thread is an association with the sea. "The Dileas" is the heartbreaking story of an aging West Highland fisherman who puts to sea in a terrible storm to rescue his two sons. The dialogue is authentic to the Highlands, and a plot twist at the end is typically MacLean. Several of the stories are thinly fictionalized accounts of wartime battles or disasters, such as "The Sinking of the Bismarck" and "The Lancastria." A few, such as "MacHinery and the Cauliflowers" are off-beat sea-going crime stories. "St George and the Dragon" is actually a rather whimsical love story.

The book includes a newspaper article in which MacLean offers his rather blunt opinions on the rewards and responsibilities of a successful writer. The article reflects MacLean's view of himself as a teller of stories for the entertainment of his readers rather than a novelist offering compelling truths to critics. The collection in "The Lonely Sea" displays MacLean's undoubted gifts in a short story format that may not be familar to many of his longtime fans.

Solid and entertaining collection of "vintage Maclean" short stories

Released near the very end of his career, when he was about a decade into his decline, `The Lonely Sea' provides a welcome collection of short stories from Alistair Maclean. Unlike the increasingly dull novels he wrote in his later life, these stories are all engaging and entertaining, and sometimes quite emotionally powerful. Either they were all written many years earlier, or Maclean was still focussed and disciplined enough in the 1970's and 80's to sustain a short story (if not a full-length book). As the title suggests, all the stories are connected in some way to the sea, but there is a wide range of subject matter. There are tales of wartime battles, heroic rescue attempts, cunning smugglers, clumsy yachtsmen, and waterproof watches.

About half the stories here are non-fictional accounts of wartime naval encounters, the highlight of which described the hunting and sinking of the Bismarck. Elsewhere, there are tales of courageous sacrifice (`Rawalpindi', `The Jervis Bay'), heroic civilian survival (`Lancastria', `City of Benares'), and tragedy due to military incompetence (`Andorra Star', `Meknes'). On the last point, Maclean pulls no punches in criticising the pig-headedness of the authorities who refused to remove barbed wire from the `Andorra Star', or who forgot to inform the Germans that the `Meknes' was a harmless passenger vessel.

The other stories are fictional, and again there is considerable variety here. Some are quite light-hearted (`McCrimmon And The Blue Moonstones', `McHinery And The Cauliflowers'), with a couple descending into near farce (`St George And The Dragon'). Others are more serious, such as the wartime descriptive piece `They Sweep The Seas', as well as `Rendezvous', which is my personal favourite, and apparently judged good enough to be converted into a full-length novel after Maclean's death. Special mention must be made of `The Dileas', a remarkably strong and affecting piece of writing for someone who at that time had no intention of becoming a full-time writer.

Also included is a short reflection by Maclean himself on `The Rewards And Responsibilities of Success', which is interesting enough if not particularly revealing.

In all, it's a solid collection of "vintage Maclean", and a reminder of how good this adventure writer once was.

Accounts of actual disasters at sea

While the author is more known for his fiction, this is a collection of short accounts of actual events at sea, with what seems to be a small amount of fiction added in. The Sinking of the Bismark has been covered in longer accounts (and also a motion picture) so the account here could be considered an abridged version of the action. He also includes accounts of other ships which are fairly well known, e.g., the Lancastria and the Jervis Bay, and many not as well known. It is of some interest to people studying the history of such events (it provides a quick reference with an overview of the action), as well as interesting to the general reader. It is an easy to read collection that can be read in segments (ideal for commuter trains, etc.).

This book is terrific! It really can help you change your life.

This is one of Brian Tracy's best books, if not the best, and should be included in anyone's library if they are interested in the subject of personal achievement. For those new to the field who need to know the basics it is possibly the best introduction you could get. For those who are well informed it does contain important information not found elsewhere.

It is hard to believe some critics of this book have actually read it. Check it out for yourself. I am an avid reader of Brian Tracy and have led seminars myself on many of the subjects he presents. This is clearly one of his best. Here are some facts:

While this book does repeat many of the ideas you will find in his other books, there is excellent new material as well, and in many cases he adds to previous concepts--sometimes short but exciting ideas that offer a potential to help people make dramatic improvements in their lives.

One feature of this book that is not as common in his other works is the reference to numerous studies by universities and other research groups that demonstrate the validity of the concepts presented. It is helpful to know the basis and validity of these ideas.

The chief value of this book when compared to Brian's other books, or to other books in the field, is that it focuses on the key concept for all thinking about successful living and personal achievement--how you think determines everything. Other works focus on goal setting, time management, and other topics in a somewhat isolated way. This work discusses these but in the context of a person's attitude toward them as the key to success. This is a subtle but important concept.

It is unfortunate that some people who have read widely in the field have downgraded this book by giving it a low rating simply because they already know much of the material. On this basis the very best first grade reader would receive one star by a fifth grader because he/she already knew all the words. This is an outstanding book and deserves five stars on the basis of what it is, not put down because somewhere in over thirty volumes written by the author he may have touched on most of the topics found here. (But remember, there is enough new material to make it worth buying even if you have many of his other works.)

About the Author

Olivia Laing's first book, To the River, was published to wide acclaim and short-listed for the Ondaatje Prize and the Dolman Travel Book of the Year. She has been the deputy books editor of the Observer, and writes for the Guardian, New Statesman, and Granta, among other publications. She is a MacDowell and Yaddo fellow, and the 2014 writer-in-residence at the British Library.

Susan Lyons has appeared on numerous television shows, including A Country Practice, Police Rescue, Something in the Air, and All Saints. Among her film credits are Winds of Jarrah and In a Savage Land. She is married to Tony Award-winning actor Jefferson Mays.

A must for lonely New Yorkers who have curiousity

This book will be in my collection til the day I die. There is so much truth and depth in the writing. As someone who has not delved into the world of art history, or criticism, I found my self completely intrigued by the artists spoken about and amazed how unaware I was of most of it. I'm impressed with the author's thinking and perspective on the brutality of loneliness. It's so darkly refreshing to know how many great minds suffer in this complexly cruel world, and somehow use that pain to make works of art. I too live in NY and am saddened and appalled by the changes in this once really interesting, artistic city that has become a playground for the very wealthy and lost so much in the process. A compelling read and quite educational. I also can't stop watching Klaus Nomi sing "Lightning Strikes" on youtube.

I took a long time to get through this terrific book, but learned alot about some artists I was ignorant of, and more about artists I knew about. She shows poignantly how tenderly art can help us when times are especially hard. I liked that she didn't idealize New York City.

One of the best books I've read in awhile

One of the best books I've read in awhile. While relating her own "condition" of loneliness in the city, exposing, but not valorizing, her vulnerability, she does not dwell there - she seeks out the experiences of others - 20th century artists of the city - and allows her curiosity, not only to connect with/to others, thus somewhat assuaging her own loneliness, but also to empathize with and value such experiences - considering the usefulness - sometimes - of loneliness in the creation of art and action. Her "readings" of very different artists like Warhol and Darger are thoughtful and provocative.
