About the Author
Rex Hartson is a pioneer researcher, teacher, and practitioner-consultant in HCI and UX. He is the founding faculty member of HCI (in 1979) in the Department of Computer Science at Virginia Tech. With Deborah Hix, he was co-author of one of the first books to emphasize the usability engineering process, Developing user interfaces: Ensuring usability through product & process. Hartson has been principle investigator or co-PI at Virginia Tech on a large number of research grants and has published many journal articles, conference papers, and book chapters. He has presented many tutorials, invited lectures, workshops, seminars, and international talks. He was editor or co-editor for Advances in Human-Computer Interaction, Volumes 1-4, Ablex Publishing Co., Norwood, NJ. His HCI practice is grounded in over 30 years of consulting and user experience engineering training for dozens of clients in business, industry, government, and the military.

Pardha S. Pyla is a Senior User Experience Specialist and Interaction Design Team Lead at Bloomberg LP. Before that he was a researcher and a UX consultant. As an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Computer Science at Virginia Tech he worked on user experience methodologies and taught graduate and undergraduate courses in HCI and Software Engineering. He is a pioneer researcher in the area of bridging the gaps between software engineering and UX engineering lifecycle processes.

Human-computer interaction in practice, not theory

Few books in the field of human-computer interaction offer such a comprehensive, logical overview of contemporary methods and processes like this one. The authors do an excellent job of distilling HCI techniques into a form that is digestible for newcomers to the field; showing where, when, why, and how requirements gathering, design, prototyping and evaluation should be done.

Whether you're aware of it or not, you are following some sort of process when you design and build a product. This book outlines many of those processes and cycles in clear detail, offering advice as to how you can use such processes to your advantage, and how to improve your current processes. Moreover, the authors describe how to practice HCI in the field with applied techniques ranging from understanding your users' needs to creating paper prototypes and wireframes.

The UX Book also talks about how user experience fits into organizations and how to apply UX design in different organizational contexts. For example, an organization that has a strong software engineering culture will need to approach UX differently from one that has business analysts setting product direction.

Consider this book HCI 101 for students interested in the field or for practitioners who want some formalized background to understand how what they do fits into the larger scope of what UX tries to accomplish. This book does not offer advice on how to become a Photoshop master nor does it offer detail about JavaScript development for high-fidelity prototyping. And unfortunately, because UX is such a broad term, some may mistake this book as a guide for learning about interaction design in detail. Those caveats in mind, this book is second to none if you're interested in learning how to practice HCI methods and how many seemingly abstract academic HCI techniques can work in the real world.

In a world where user experience is often regarded as an after-thought or a "nice to have," this book really makes the case for a comprehensive and integrated approach to building interactive systems. If you want to convince someone on your team about the importance of user experience, you will find many talking points in this book. If you yourself want to learn about user experience, and why it is absolutely essential, buy this book.

Much of user experience in practice is at the overlap of psychology, design, and software engineering. A lot of UX books are heavy on the psychology side, and speak to an academic audience. Talking about abstract theories from psychology may not translate well among the software development team. This book helps bridge that gap by talking about UX in a common sense way. The book presents Wheel, a process to "ensure a quality user experience" in a systematic software-engineering-like that developers can relate to and apply.

Try this: When you run into a UX challenge at work, don't pull the book off the shelf... but really think of how YOU would approach that problem. THEN go back and read the book. You will see how much it rings true. You would digest the material and remember it better, that way. If you just read it cover to cover without a real problem to solve in your mind, you might not feel the true impact of the book. You might think "yeah - what's the big deal about a bunch of post-it notes on a wall or sketching dozens of design ideas when only one will be used?" But if you tried approaching the problem yourself first, you'd appreciate the value of the methods suggested in the book.

Actionable, practical, down-to-earth advice for students and practitioners, with some humor too! GRAB THIS BOOK!

Where is Information Architecture?

I picked this up with a lot of excitement; I teach and mentor in the field and have long been looking for something that could become the seminal textbook as opposed to the assortment of books I currently need to assign or recommend to really cover the bases. At first glance this book looks wonderful--it is obviously written by authors with deep expertise, I love that it is geared to active learning with the inclusion of exercises, it is thoughtfully organized. As I scanned through the table of contents an alarm bell went off in my mind, however--how could a book purporting to be a comprehensive guide to designing effective user experiences (which primarily still means designing effective user interfaces) fail to include information architecture? This strikes me as a really egregious oversight.

Some books on the topic don't use the term "information architecture" but they still delve deeply into organization, navigation, content strategy, and other critical elements that information architecture encompasses. I'm always disappointed when the term "information architecture" isn't used, as I consider it the best and most widely understood term for capturing this unique set of components--but a rose by any other name still smells as sweet, so I can cope without the term as long as the concepts are there. I don't think that is really the case with this text, however. There is a (thin) chapter on mental models that imperfectly and partially covers this territory--and that is about it.

In reality, this book is an extensive usability evaluation techniques book (and from that aspect it appears to be a very good one) that also includes information on user research techniques and a chapter on prototyping. This is not a comprehensive user experience design text and I would not recommend it as such given that such critical content is absent. I would go as far as to say that students using this book and no other would come away dangerously misguided about what is required to create truly good user interfaces and user experiences.

Another reader that I discussed this with acknowledged that it is troubling that IA is missing in both name and form but encouraged me to appreciate that the book is pretty good at everything else it covers and great at many. I don't want to throw the baby out with the bathwater, but that seems a bit like saying that we should appreciate an anatomy text for its brilliant coverage of the nervous system, muscles, and organs, and overlook the fact that the skeleton is missing. And that's why I feel that this book can't warrant even a 3 star review.

Great fun for kids who play the online game, or who just love animals!

My daughter is a devoted player of the Animal Jam game online, and I've seen the cleaver ways the game incorporates educational material and drives curiosity about science. I had no hesitation in picking up this book for her, and we have both enjoyed it tremendously. This is the perfect marriage of the visually arresting virtual world of Animal Jam and the incredible animal photography and educational resources of National Geographic. The book juxtaposes the fictional environments and animals of Jamaa with their real-world counterparts, weaving in interesting facts and valuable background info to help kids understand the ecological roles these animals play.

Primarily a guide to the online game, the book provides a lot of information that may be new to even longtime Animal Jam players. Each region of the game has its own chapter, and every species of animal that appears in the game has at least a page or two. I was impressed by the sort of educational divergences from this primary theme that the author decided to take. For instance, the chapter about Jamaa Township (a central location in the game world) includes interesting tangents on the history of city dwelling and the construction of modern "green" cities. My daughter particularly loved reading the story behind some of the game's main characters, and even now she is scurrying back and forth between her room where she's reading the book, and the computer room where she's checking out some hidden game feature she just discovered. I predict I'll be seeing this behavior a lot in the coming weeks.

The rich photography and vibrant, kid-friendly graphic design you would expect from National Geographic are well represented here. Animal Jam has a very unique art style that I believe has contributed to the game's popularity, and the book's designers have done a great job bringing it to life. The book is organized into bite-sized chunks of text and artwork, in a magazine-like format that will be familiar to readers of NatGeo's other kids' books, such as their almanac. Based on vocabulary and complexity, I would guess the ideal solo reader is between 7-10 years old; although kids as young as 3-4 will certainly enjoy the imagery as it's read to them.

Whether your child is a die-hard Animal Jam player or just loves animals, this is a great summer book that packs a lot of fun into its 240 pages.

Great for Animal Jam game lovers or for any animal lovers!

All three of my kids (11, 9, and 7) love this game and have learned a lot about animals in this super fun virtual world. This book is great because it gives lots of factual information about the real-life animals, plus the back stories on the alphas and avatars. I was impressed with how much they managed to pack in and how fun this book is to browse. My youngest read it cover to cover without any prompting (and she's been avoiding some of the rest of her summer reading). What a cool blend of real and virtual, fact and fiction, photos and art! National Geographic offers so many amazing ways for kids to learn these days.

"[A] very good text, especially in terms of the biotic ecological processes that it covers. In many ways, this textbook provides a really refreshing blend of ecological concepts as they apply to aquatic ecology, in addition to the basic knowledge of freshwater ecosystem organisms that a student would need to apply the concepts… We think that it is a successful, innovative and, for the most part, modern view of the study of inland waters. As seems to be the case with many current texts, this one makes full use of a variety of presentation methods: boxes, biographies, methods boxes and sidebars (which, incidentally, are not on the side). Some are more successful than others. Each chapter also ends with summary points to guide students but, more interestingly, with a series of questions. We found that most of these questions were quite useful and thought-provoking. As in much of ecology, they were often open to a variety of answers and we felt that they would be useful for promoting discussion amongst students. The authors are both primarily stream ecologists and one can often sense greater enthusiasm from them when lotic processes and organisms are discussed. Certain concepts (e.g. disturbance, fish and invertebrate ecology) are explored in greater detail, probably reflecting the authors’ backgrounds and interests. However, that said, the discussion of lentic environments is not short-changed and this text would serve any general undergraduate limnology course very well. In fact, in some ways this bias has enabled the authors to provide a refreshing and balanced look at the field, as many older texts have a lake-centric focus." - Limnology and Oceanography Bulletin, March 2011

About the Author
Walter. K. Dodds received his Ph.D. in Biology in 1986 from the University of Oregon. From 1987 to 1990 he was a post doctoral fellow in the Department of Biology at Montana State University. In 1990 he accepted an Assistant Professor position in the Division of Biology at Kansas State University, in 1995 he was promoted to Associate Professor and in 2002 to full Professor. Over the years, Dodds has taught Limnology, Advanced Aquatic Ecology, Microbial Ecology, Principles of Biology, Conservation Biology, Environmental Problems, Origins of Life, Herbivory, Presentations in Ecology, Aquatic Ecology, Stream Ecology, Algal Identification, Algal Ecology, Bacteriology and Freshwater Biology. He has professional memberships in the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Society of Limnology and Oceanography, the American Society of Microbiology, the North American Benthological Society, the Phycological Society of America and Sigma Xi. Dodds has grants from agencies including the National Science Foundation, the United States Environmental Protection Agency, the United States Geological Survey, the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. He has been involved in the Konza Prairie Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) program and provides leadership for the Konza LTER Aquatic and Hydrological Group and the Konza LTER Research Experience for Undergraduates program.

Dodds’ recent research has focused on Aquatic Ecology on Konza Prairie, Nitrogen Uptake Retention and Cycling in Stream Ecosystems, Quality and Quantity of Suspended Solids in Kansas Rivers, and Nutrients and Algae in Streams. Dodds has been invited to present seminars at over 20 US agencies and universities, as well as agencies and universities in Australia, New Zealand and Canada. He has presented at numerous national and international scientific conferences and has produced over 80 peer reviewed publications, 2 book chapter

Readable, understandable, current

I've been teaching aquatic biology and limnology at the University level for more than 20 years. Until now I used "Limnology" by Robert Wetzel as my textbook. The 3rd edition of Limnology came out in 2001, and in 2005 Bob Wetzel passed away. I continued using his book for the next 10 years, but it was going progressively out of date. When I checked with the publisher I was informed that at least at that time there was no plan for anyone to take over the title and update it. So...I started looking around for other options.

About a year ago I came across "Freshwater Ecology" by Dodds and Whiles, and gave it a look. It was published in 2010, nearly a decade newer than the last edition of Limnology. I decided to adopt it for my senior level course in Limnology. I just finished using it for that class for the first time. This is a small enrollment class of usually around a dozen students. Most students who take this class are eyeing careers in fisheries management or ecology.

We use the textbook extensively in class. At least half of each class meeting is devoted to open discussion of the assigned reading for the day. By the end of the semester students and I had read the entire textbook. Readings for this class were pretty heavy going when I used Limnology by Wetzel. But this semester, when I asked my students how they liked "Freshwater Ecology" they reported that they found it to be readable and understandable...not something my students used to say about "Limnology."

I too found this textbook informative and readable. I also read the whole thing this semester with my students. As textbooks in specialized areas go, this one is excellent. Don't get me wrong, it's its own book, it's not just a Wetzel reboot. I like the layout, the presentation, and the content.

I plan to use this textbook for the foreseeable future.

Midwest oriented

There are many Midwestern examples in this book (talks about Ogallala aquifer, Missouri river, etc.). It's dense with information and sometimes difficult to construct a clear idea of what a term is based on context clues, but it does have a glossary to help with that. Even though it is dense with information, it's not written as such a high level that someone who's taken ecology to understand.

Decent book

For the most part, I really enjoyed using this book for class. The content discussing abiotic factors can be really confusing and seems to repeat itself (a lot); however, content discussing biotic factors of ecology was very well presented and really interesting to read.

Greer's father, an Australian intelligence officer, left for WW II when she was only four. His cavalier pose concealed a family secret revealed in the closing section of this poignant memoir by the author of The Female Eunuch . Reg Greer came back from the war an anxiety-ridden, emotionally distant wreck. His daughter's later need to reconnect with him and her genealogical roots involved coming to terms with her craving for the love he never gave her. A very unusual, and in my own opinion absolutely absorbing, narrative by a writer of exceptional talent. Germaine Greer was driven (not to say well paid) to root out the secrets that underlay her father's strange personality. He had died when she was young, and in such time as they shared he had been putting up some sort of pose or front that she could never penetrate or fathom, then or later. He died in generally sound bodily health although suffering from some variety of degenerative brain disorder; but long before that set in it was obvious that there was something seriously not right with him.

Germaine Greer's search for her father's identity starts with the assumption, hardly an unreasonable one, that if she was going to find out anything about him she would at least find it indexed under `Greer'. Only when the truth finally dawns that even that is not so does the rest of the bizarre jigsaw at last fit together. Her search takes her across a great deal of the globe - Tasmania, mainland Oz, Italy, India, Malta and even fabled Cambridge. The general plan of the book seems fairly clear, and it appears to consist of hanging lengthy essays on a variety of subjects, sometimes only distantly related to the overall theme, on the main connecting cable of the narrative. The plan works not too badly by and large, but probably not as well as it ought to have. I'd say the book starts well and ends well - in fact it ends spectacularly well - and that is nine tenths of the battle. It is in some of the middle chapters that I sense a loss of concentration and focus. The successful and welcome digressions, for me, were those in which Dr Greer was advancing a strong and distinctive message of her own, say a feminist message or an environmental commentary. I found her interesting and convincing when discussing women's conditions in wartime Malta, but a lot less so when she was just being a run-of-the-mill general historian of that episode. I was very interested in her analytic social history of Tasmania, a matter she has something to say about, but I thought that her chapter at the Cambridge college high table wearing her doctoral gown and hobnobbing with the Master of this and Professor of that descended into twittering. Loss of concentration even shows through as bad proof-reading in these less than wonderful sequences: how about `If they are treated as a rabble by commanding officers who understand nothing of their background and make no attempt to put them in the picture they will be more prepared to kill him than to die for him' (p144) for instance? Or the Spitfire on p188 with `one engine aflame'? How many engines did this particular Spitfire have?

Nevertheless the author gets her formidable focus realigned as her investigations come to their remarkable and even exciting conclusion, all the better for the abortive findings, cleverly told and skilfully paced in the story-line, that precede it. Quite apart from the narrative aspects, there is some well observed and waspishly depicted detail of how people behave and systems operate. Australian information retrieval processes and Australian male dress-codes, whether accurate or parodied, are nothing if not memorable as described here. And there is more to it than criticism and fault-finding - there is a real heroine (aside from the narrator that is) in this narrative, one who could hardly have expected such an eloquent eulogist.

I am not myself at home with the vocabulary of self-discovery, but quite obviously this book is not exclusively or even principally some commercial enterprise undertaken turpis lucri gratia. Nor is it even mainly an intellectual exercise, still less a travelogue as I have seen suggested. The greatest gift that providence has given Germaine Greer is the formidable articulacy that enables her to cope with emotional shocks that would have choked many others through incapacity to verbalise them to themselves let alone to anyone else. As always, I find the personality that she projects to be immensely sympathetic and honest. I am in no position to claim that she tells it all to herself and to the world unflinchingly, indeed she must have endured but overcome some epic bouts of flinching. Nevertheless she has a fascinating tale to tell, but I feel unable to say in so many words that at the end of it she and we know her better, because one of the things we end up knowing is that she is not really Germaine Greer.

Germaine's crazy family revealed

After reading this book one feels sorry for poor Germaine.For a start, her mother was mentally unbalanced. Germaine reveals that when she bought home a boy friend, her mother would often open the front door wearing a pair of underpants on her head and nothing else but a suntan. Her mother "used words as ammunition, not for communication." This book is Germaine's search for the true identity of her father. To hide his illegitimate birth, her father wove a web of falsehoods around his early life. He was always distant with Germaine, and never gave her a proper hug.Feeling suicidal she once fell over a cliff, and it is ironic she was only saved by her father's coat she was wearing when it caught on a snag. There are dreary false trails and much padding in this book.Germaine's self-pity gets a bit much to take.Her vinegary nature must be in part a result of her family situation.At the end of the book I read,someone had pencilled in "so what." An apt comment.

She had genuine reasons to find out who he really was. Throughout her life he was unaffectionate and not there when she needed him. Her search was done without the assistance of internet. At that time in life, people would like to see the real meaning of certain events and experiences. Her writing is spot on!
