Finally a Great JavaScript Book

WARNING this a really long review, because I talk about my history with head first books and how I view the authors, but the short version is that the book is great and if you have not bought it yet, then you should drop everything your doing and buy this book.

I can still remember the first time that I ever heard the words HTML, CSS and JavaScript. It was when Jon Rubinstein was taking about how easy it was to make a webOS app during an interview. When I heard that it was easy I decided that I should teach myself how to write this so called HTML, CSS and JavaScript. After failing to successfully teach myself HTML and CSS from the tutorials online I thought about buying a book, so I did some research online and found that several people recommended the book "Head First HTML with CSS & XHTML". I fell in love with this book, it was so clear and easy to understand. It not only explained things in a way that a complete beginner could understand, but it also empowered you by showing you how to create web pages that actually looked good, while reinforcing the concepts they showed you by repeating them in the book and having you do exercises at the end of each chapter, also the "there are no dumb questions" sections in the book seemed to always be the questions that I was asking (it was like they were reading my mind). After I finished the book I felt like I could take on anything (which is a pretty awesome feeling). So I thought no problem I'll just learn JavaScript now, by buying the Head First JavaScript book and going through it like I did with the "HTML with CSS & XHTML" book, but as soon as I started to read that terrible book, my hopes of becoming a JavaScript Guru were shattered. The book would say things like "this is similar to a Java class" (obviously I am going off of memory here, because I cannot force myself to go through that book again), which was confusing to someone who did not even know what Java was. I could go into a rant about why I did not like the old JavaScript book, but the short version is that I had to buy the book "JavaScript a Beginners Guide" and read that before I could finish reading the old JavaScript book because I got stuck reading it all of the time and would just spend hours not knowing what to do. When I finished the old book I still did not consider myself to be good at JavaScript and did not feel comfortable writing it or reading it, which is why I decided to go to college. At college I have learned a lot of things in the world of programming like Java and Object Oriented Design, Networking etc.. but I have never lost the desire to learn JavaScript. This is why I was so excited when I heard that Eric Freeman and Elisabeth Robson were writing a JavaScript book. They are such skilled writers, because they have the ability to approach writing a book from the perspective of a beginner. So I went on their website wickedlysmart.com and signed up for they're early access program. Since I am in college and I have to write Java programs every week I was not able to contribute to their book, but I was able to find time to read the chapters as they wrote them, and I can say that I was really happy with what I saw.

First off, let me say that I know a lot more about programming now then I did when I read the first JavaScript book (the one I didn't like). When I read the old book, I had never heard of an object before and I was confused by simple things like while loops and for loops. However when I read the chapters of this book I tried to imagine that I still did not know anything, because I believe that programming books should be written with beginners in mind. There are a thousand crash course books out there for programmers who are moving to JavaScript from another language and just want to know the language specifics. So now that I wasted enough time rambling let me get into the review. The most important thing that I was looking for in this book was that the book try to make things simple for beginners, which it did. The authors stepped through all of important programming concepts like loops, if statements, and objects from the beginning explaining everything as they went though. This book also did a great job of covering really important concepts like functions. The authors also empowered the reader by having them create some really awesome things like a functional battleship game! Lastly the book was just written in a style that is unique to the authors. I have read other head first books (some of which I really liked) and I can always tell the difference between the books written by other authors and the books that were written by Eric Freeman and Elisabeth Robson. If you do not believe me I dare you to read the old book and then read the new one. It is like night and day.

In the end I would say that this is the first JavaScript book that I have ever really liked. I have read some that I thought were ok, and obviously I have read some that I just flat out hated, but this is the first one I loved. If you are a beginner and you need a good JavaScript book to get you creating some awesome web pages then this is the book for you. It is the book that I wish I had when I was learning this stuff for the first time.

One last note is that if you just got done reading the head first HTML and CSS book, then this book is basically a must have. Wouldn't you want to learn JavaScript from the same people who just taught you HTML and CSS? Its basically a no-brainer.

You'll learn a tremendous amount

I must say that I was part of the Insider program and read the book while it was being written.

At first, I thought I would only learn the Javascript basics. I was wrong, this book is an unstoppable learning train.

It takes you on board and builds steam while teaching you the basics. Next thing you know, you are programming a nice Battleship game. You'll then learn the fundamentals of Objects and Functions... just the fundamental? Not at all, that's when the book gets unstoppable, you'll dig deeper than any other beginner JS books I've read on objects and functions, in fact, First Class Functions and Prototype won't have any secrets for you and that's where the book shines. In the end, you'll look back and have a hard time believing how much distance you've covered.

One last word: the creativity and thoughtfulness of the authors makes it my favorite Head First book!

Enlightening

Is it strange to say that a Javascript book has a great ending? Well, this one did. I'm not one of the people who was asked to do a review. I just bought a hardcopy and actually read every word on every page for my own use - just a regular web developer looking to deepen my understanding.

My skill level:
I've been studying Javascript for a couple of years and have used it a lot at my new job in the last 6 months. Sometimes I inherit projects that have pre-existing Javascript that is sometimes pretty complex. We also use some frameworks and libraries like jQuery, Express, nodeJS, and AngularJS. So, I got this book to understand all those things better.

About the Book:
The book itself is steady and clear with a variety of projects and written in a friendly tone. It starts from zero, so if you know nothing, you're in the right place. If, like me, you've been working in it and have wondered what some of the parts do at a fundamental level but haven't had a chance to get to the bottom of it, this book will probably cover it. Even though it covers the basic stuff, it also gets into advanced topics. In fact, the last three chapters are worth the cost of the book alone. The chapter on prototypal inheritance upped my game in one evening. No kidding.

My Experience with the Book:
It's over 600 pages but flows pretty quickly considering the topic. If like me, you've been working with Javascript, you might find the first 400 pages or so to be a refresher and zoom through. After about pg. 400, I started running into more bits of info and concepts that really clarified some things. That's where I really started getting grateful that they'd done all this hard work. As I went through this book, I was also going through the 12 hour series "Crockford on Javascript" at the same time. He gets pretty in depth in some of it and on a spooky number of occasions I'd just learned a concept the night before in this book that Crockford would then discuss. Much to my delight I understood everything he went into where I know I would have missed things had I not had this book in my back pocket.

My Full Assessment:
Just get the book. It's great - every page. Work your way through it and then watch the 'Crockford on Javascript' series (free on YouTube) and you'll prove to yourself just how cool you are. Then go get that dev job. They don't use dollar signs in programming languages for nothing. :)

This is an awesome children's book. I bought it for my daughter and she read it in a one sitting and re-read it so many times that I couldn't keep the count. She was thrilled at first and she is thrilled every time she reads it. Great Great Great Book.

This book transports the young and the old together to the time and space of the Guru Nanak. This work has been long awaited and it fills the gaping hole of awe-inspiring bed time stories for the Sikh children of the North American subcontinent nay, all the English speaking children of the world. Guaranteed to replace 'Disney's Bed Time Stories' in every Sikh home with children: your children are going to ask for it. The quality of content, illustrations and thought process it invokes makes it a masterpiece. It could be a perfect activity for your family time by the fireplace or a Sunday school story-telling session.

Durrow fashions a classic fish-out-of-water tale in her brilliant debut, which some compare to Toni Morison's The Bluest Eye in its exploration of race and identity. It comes as no surprise that The Girl Who Fell from the Sky was awarded the 2008 Bellwether Prize, the award founded by author Barbara Kingsolver to support literature of social responsibility. This is certainly not an easy read, with each chapter told from a different character's viewpoint with a "Rashomon quality that builds tension around the ... mystery," and readers may have to schedule some time for emotional recovery (Washington Post). However, Durrow's novel is ultimately a powerful and ultimately uplifting work of fiction.

Amazing Prose, Flat Plot

"The Girl Who Fell from the Sky" tells a story of a family tragedy and survival from the points of view of five interconnected characters. Though the story is in fact very simple, the nonlinear time line, limited narrators, and unconventional sentence structure, give the novel an odd sense of unreality and mystery--an airy elusiveness that keeps readers guessing, working to put the pieces together.

Set in 1980s Portland, OR, the novel opens innocuously with 10-year-old Rachel moving in with her grandmother. It's clear that the move is precipitated by some recent family tragedy, but the exact nature of what has happened remains at first obscure. Rachel's first-person, child's-eye-view narration is absorbing. Bright and perceptive, she eagerly relates the details that strike her as new and curious--her grandmother's unfamiliar speech and special lavender lotion, her aunt Loretta's smooth beauty and "potential lizard," Drew. More reluctantly, she discusses her sense of cultural alienation as the daughter of an African American serviceman and a Danish woman, living in America (and experiencing American racial tensions) for almost the first time. Rachel feels divided from the white girls at school because of her darker skin, alienated from black girls because of her blue eyes and her over-achiever status. She also desperately misses the hybrid Danish-American culture in which she was raised.

Like the best first-person narrators, Rachel tells readers more than she means to, occasionally even more than she herself understands. Gradually, it becomes clear that Rachel's mother and younger siblings recently died in an "accident"--that the whole family fell from the top of a Chicago apartment building where they had been living for most of one summer, leaving Rachel the only survivor.

Interspersed with Rachel's narration are third-person sections following Jamie, a young neighbor boy who witnesses the family's fall, and Laronne, the supervisor at the community college library where Rachel's mother, Nella, had worked during her short stay in Chicago. As the novel progresses, Laronne finds and reads Nella's diaries, while Jamie meets and talks to Rachel's father Roger, creating fourth and fifth narrative strains that also help to fill out the story.

The novel is complicated, not only by the mode of storytelling, but by the themes which populate it--race and class, of course, but also alcoholism and addiction. Imagery of birds and flight and sky and maps also permeates the text, flowing through nearly every section. The effect is striking, artistic, holistic, but also unsubtle.

The climax of the story falls flat, failing to deliver the emotional impact that has been set up, and leaving behind a myriad of loose ends. It's common in novels that aspire to "post modernism" that stories trail off, that life goes on, as it might in the real world, without the neat bows and morals of classical literature, but this is extreme. In the final chapters, it seems, all the characters but two disappear without explanation. It feels rushed, and it feels false. But it's worth keeping in mind that Durrow is still a very young writer. Her prose is astounding, her characterization deep and astute, she just hasn't mastered plot and pacing completely.

Nothing prepared me for this . . .

Thinking that this was one of the most mediocre books I had read as I glided through the pages. One narrator, then two, then I lost count as to how manny different narrators spoke their stories . . . all distant, all related. Then at about the time I thought maybe I'd rate "The Girl Who Fell From the Sky", as a three, the narratives started converging. What I thought was a simple story to read (but realized the challenge in the writing of it), became the answer to a mystery that only somewhere in the back of my mind I had all along been asking questions to. Very pleased I spent part of my February reading this novel. It turned into a tear-jerker toward the end, preparation for the unthinkable and unexpected conclusion.

A Great Debut Novel on Race

I picked up The Girl Who Fell from the Sky by Heidi Durrow as an impulse buy. The ebook was $1.99 on Amazon, it had some good reviews underneath it, and I figured it was a worth a shot. I am so glad I took the gamble as this is such a great book that I immediately started recommending to my friends after finishing it.

The story is about Rachel primarily, but it is also about Jamie who becomes Brick by the end.

Rachel is half Danish and half black and must live with her grandmother in Portland, OR after an event that happens in Rachel's life when she was living in Chicago. The event is the main mystery of the book, so I will not spoil what happened. All we know is Rachel now lives with her black grandmother in a black neighborhood, her father has gone back on assignment, and her mother and brothers are gone.

A large portion of the book is not only about Rachel's past, but about how Rachel now must fit in a primarily black community as she is light skinned and bright eyed. We follow Rachel throughout her life from early childhood into adulthood as she struggles with not quite fitting into either of the two communities- the white community, where she is too dark, and the black community, where she is too white. Men find her attractive, as she has developed early, and exotic, which doesn't help with the women within each community.

As stated, it is also the story of Jamie aka Brick, who is the sole witness to the event that happened in Rachel's life. His mother is a drug using prostitute of sorts and is absent in Jamie's life. He runs away one day, as a young child in search of Rachel. He only knows she is in Portland, but can only afford a bus ticket half way there. We follow his life as a homeless child growing up on the streets who is used by two other homeless people to make money off of him. Will he find Rachel and be able to tell her what happened? Hint: yes!

The story is told through the eyes of many of the characters, primarily Rachel's, who's narration changes the older she gets. I really appreciated this as most authors don't bother to change sentence structure or tone as the person ages. Durrow did this for Rachel and Brick.

We also get glimpses into the event through the eyes of Rachel's mother, who kept a journal which is found by her neighbor and friend. Even though we get glimpses of the event and know what happened, the bigger question is why did this event happen and we are left in the dark until the very end of the book.

The characters are well developed and grow throughout the book. The writing is top notch too. Durrow definitely drew from her own life and that shows throughout the book, especially within the tension of not fitting into one culture. My copy had an interview with her, where she opens up about some of her life.

I really enjoyed this one and would highly recommend it. It might get dusty a few times in the room, but it is definitely worth the read. I gave this one 4 stars.

The book's prose tends to be dense and terse, as befits its subject, but it is not impersonal. Herendeen discusses his sojourn in Norway in the late 1970s as a way of introducing the difference between fixed and variable costs. He and his wife were happy not owning a car there because they thought in terms of average costs, and taking the bus seemed cheaper. Excellent teaching tool but needs to be updated

I purchased this book to use as part of a course on sustainability. It is very useful in illustrating different concepts such as exponential growth and limits, marginal v. average costs and decision making, etc and provides lots of good examples. However its unorthodox organization makes it difficult to apply to a class organized by topic area (energy, food, etc). It also would benefit from being updated and increased emphasis on climate and energy topics.

This book should be read by any who want some reality applied to their ecology beliefs. This book is really a competent upper division text book that takes quantitative analysis seriously. My take is that Herendeen is attempting to make ecology into something akin to current day economics. The education about and then critique of cost benefit analysis (consider the time discount rate of the value defined over 300 years) was informative to novices like me who are inclined to promote simple cost benefit analysis approaches of almost all ecology problems. The raw data on large numbers of ecology parameters is also useful (e.g. half life of CO2 in the atmosphere, and hundreds of other data points) just to get some scale to your ecology intuitions.

A Good Way To Get the Scope of Religions in America

I had to read this book for a Religious Studies course, and I have to say, it was a good read. There was extensive research behind it, and Albanese condensed the beliefs of religions to a couple pages. It was very informative. Studying this book, I learned a lot about various religions in America and how they all stem from basic core beliefs of the three major religions: Christianity, Catholicism, and Judaism. The most important thing to learn about the many religions in America is that they create the oneness of America.

The only thing I did not like about this book was that my religion seemed a little off. However, its interpretation is coming from an unbiased scholarly view. It's hard sometimes to read things objectively when you know a lot about your religion! Nevertheless, Albanese was just offering a general description.

An interesting read and very helpful for Religious Studies majors!
