Maybe it hit me at just the right time, but I really enjoyed this collection of observations about the 90's. Incisive musical commentary, and great tie-ins to modern trends. The homage to Philip Roth sealed the deal.

Excellent & Interesting Book, even if you don't like Smashing Pumpkins

This was a very interesting sociological analysis of American mainstream culture from the early 1990s to now, with a particular emphasis on music's place in that culture. The uniqueness of the all-too-short grunge era is placed within a larger context of history (both American and musical) and a greater understanding of what led to it is thereby accomplished. Admittedly - as some other reviewers have pointed out - the author's love of Smashing Pumpkins is extreme, so if you like that band a lot you will definitely enjoy reading about them here. And even if you don't like them you can just skip a few paragraphs and you'll be fine. Some of the high points of this book for me were:

- an eye-opening side-by-side comparison of the release patterns of Smashing Pumpkins and Nirvana [let me just say they have far more in common than you realize]

- a hilarious and spot-on examination of the authenticity of the nerdiness of the members of Weezer versus The Presidents of the United States of America

- an intelligently expounded theory on why chefs are essentially the rockstars of today

Regarding this last point, have you ever wondered why food culture and subculture is so prevalent now? Why there are seemingly a gazillion "options" for any particular foodstuff you want to buy? Why there are now people who call themselves "foodies"? Why modern day "rockstars" are basically chefs on Food Network rather than being actual rock stars on MTV? Well . . . this book goes a long way toward answering these and other questions.

Definitely a well-written and interesting read, especially for anyone who lived through the early nineties. I highly recommend it!

This was a fantastic read. If you're an upper-stage millenial/cusper/whatever you want to call yourself other than what your are, which is OLD, then Craft is right in your wheelhouse. He appears to be the leading voice among the emerging early 80s class of "when I was your age" nostalgia junkies, and I love every minute of it. Side note - can I buy that quinoa button with Amazon prime?

Explains the "why" but could go deeper on the "how"

I wanted to love this book, but I only just liked it. I got some good pieces of information out of it, but nothing too revolutionary. The biggest takeaway is something I knew already but something that was good to read in the way the author presented it, and that's the fact that negative emotions aren't bad to have. You can learn from them and use them to guide you to living a life that's more in tune with your values and soon you'll feel less negative emotions once you're operating all on the same frequency with yourself. I wanted this book to go deeper, though. I felt the explanations of how to do something, how to help yourself really get unstuck, stopped short.

An issue I personally have is knowing what my values are...I just simply don't know them. It would have been nice if this book gave a bit more detail as to how one might be able to figure out their values, besides trial and error and listening to their emotional feedback. I value things but don't act on them, and I'm not sure if those are still things I actually value. Maybe they're just things I'd like to value, but it'd take a super big change in character for me to act on those values and I'm not sure how to do that (this book didn't help with that). Since I'm focused on those as my values, I'm ignoring whatever the hell my real values are. But without those values in place, I don't know what I'm left with. Maybe I'm a terrible person who doesn't value much? Who knows, I don't.

Labeling emotions was a helpful exercise that I took away from this book; it's good to not place blame or judgment with how you feel and let things just *be* what they are without trying to force them into something else. That said, I read this book because I know changes need to happen in my life and while I'm not going to try to force those changes, I'm still not 100% sure how to solidly guide myself into those changes. I'm well-versed with mindfulness and I know that a big element of suffering is our human tendency to attach expectations to things, and letting go of those expectations is important. Emotional Agility touches upon this, but I felt the author could again go further in explaining how one can let go. There can be a lot of emotional trauma and history that leads one to hold onto something for dear life, even if it's hurting them to do so and they're aware of that (such as a past love that has no chance of being mended back into a relationship). But just being able to let go doesn't magically happen when you know that you should do it and why you should it (but oh, how I wish that were all it took).

If a workbook based on this book was released, that would probably be extremely helpful for people, such as myself, who are still feeling stuck. I know the actions to take but I'm still weary on how to take those actions. Even if I know what step one is, I might not know how to get to step one or act upon my motivation to get myself there. There's a missing link, a disconnect, between where I'm currently at and how to start with what I want to change and embrace to ease my daily suffering with things. This is most likely my fault, not the author's fault, but if the author was willing to put together a workbook to expand on this book, I would surely purchase it. Something to get the ball rolling and help me build up the momentum of being able to get unstuck.

This book has great ideas in it, it makes sense, it just didn't get me in a position where I could do something with that information. Still a good read, and I recommend it for anywhere looking for a place to start if they're feeling like the world is against them and they can't keep their head above water.

Absolutely loved this book

Absolutely loved this book. First heard of it through HBR podcast. I liked her thought process around positivity and the reality that thoughts don't paint our destiny, we have control over what we do and how we connect to those thoughts. From a personal perspective it resonated with some of the less desirable ways I treat myself and the internal chatter that happens both at home and at the office. The "hooks" of childhood are tough to shake but recognizing their overall negative drain on productivity is crucial. From a business perspective I've incorporated this book as a must read for leaders going through a self-awareness program.

I'm On My Second Read!

I'm on my second read. Why? Because the content has become life-changing! I've read so many self-help books, and now I know why they didn't work. They caused me to beat myself up. Instead Dr. David shares in "Emotional Agility" how to find your values and create "Self-compassion". And, I suggest the Amazon Audible Edition. Why? Because it's read by Susan herself and there is an emotion and emphasis that made me feel she was having a personal conversation with me. And I love her accent. Fasten your seat-belt!

Extremely useful!

This book is a great for anyone who wants the foundations to work with differential forms. Probably it would be very useful for graduate students or even undergraduate students who ware taking classes in differential geometry or differential topology as an **additional** reference. In particular, I'm using it to study exterior differential systems and PDE systems. Check to see if your library has the hard-copy or the electronic version because the only minus is that it's price is too expensive (very common with titles published by World Scientific). In part I guess its size and quality justifies part of the price. I love that it has lots of examples and the author does not shy away of doing calculations. Too often in math textbooks all the grinding work is left as exercises but here this is not the case. Also the book has a good selection of problems. Best book on differential forms I ever read. Also the language is more accessible to scientists from other fields than mathematics; there is no category theory jargon muddling the text. It beats Darling's book ( Differential Forms Connections R Darling fair and square.

Clean modern presentation.

This is a grad level text. It's written in a more informal manner than the usual pure math text -- i.e., the usual unmotivated staccato style of definition-lemma-theorem-corollary is absent and the author tries to explain the meaning of the ideas, interspersed with calculations from time to time.But it is still an intimidating text that covers quite a bit of terrain and would probably be suitable only for grad level students. I see it as a more discursive and motivated reincarnation of Bishop and Goldberg's terse "Tensor Analysis on Manifolds."

Suhubi covers -- among other topics -- forms, integration of forms, connections, elementary Lie theory, variational calculus, and de Rham cohomology. He doesn't cover spectral sequences or characteristic classes (for the former, try chapter 3 of Bott and Tu's "Differential Forms in Algebraic Topology," and for the latter, either chapter 4 of Bott and Tu or the second half of Morita's "Geometry of Differential Forms.")

Suhubi writes carefully, with close attention to detail. But one should be primed for this text by having read, say, Janich's "Vector Analysis" as an undergrad, or the even more basic book, Garrity's "Electricity and Magnetism for Mathematicians."

I know all the books written about differentiable forms and this one is the best one i have ever seen...I can not even compare this excellent book with the others...If you want to learn differentiable forms then you need this extraordinary book...You can find everything in this book in detail...Everthing is explained clearly...and you can find many good examples solved in detail..I am sure if you buy this book you will find that this book is much more better than your expectations..While reading the book you can see the authors great mastery and inteligence in each line..I am strongly recomended this book for everybody who wants to learn differential forms and to gain an experince to apply differential forms to physics and many other engineering problems. I want to thank the great Professor Erdogan Suhubi for this excellent book...

About the Author
Bradley Efron is Max H. Stein Professor, Professor of Statistics, and Professor of Biomedical Data Science at Stanford University, California. He has held visiting faculty appointments at Harvard University, Massachusetts, the University of California, Berkeley, and Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, London. Efron has worked extensively on theories of statistical inference, and is the inventor of the bootstrap sampling technique. He received the National Medal of Science in 2005 and the Guy Medal in Gold of the Royal Statistical Society in 2014.

Trevor Hastie is John A. Overdeck Professor, Professor of Statistics, and Professor of Biomedical Data Science at Stanford University, California. He is coauthor of Elements of Statistical Learning, a key text in the field of modern data analysis. He is also known for his work on generalized additive models and principal curves, and for his contributions to the R computing environment. Hastie was awarded the Emmanuel and Carol Parzen prize for Statistical Innovation in 2014.

Interesting, but too much overlap with their other books

An Introduction to the Bootstrap (Chapman & Hall/CRC Monographs on Statistics & Applied Probability)
Large-Scale Inference: Empirical Bayes Methods for Estimation, Testing, and Prediction (Institute of Mathematical Statistics Monographs)
The Elements of Statistical Learning: Data Mining, Inference, and Prediction, Second Edition (Springer Series in Statistics)
Statistical Learning with Sparsity: The Lasso and Generalizations (Chapman & Hall/CRC Monographs on Statistics & Applied Probability)
Roughly 50% of the book consists of abridged topics from the above. In particular, most of part III is machine learning topics that are presented better in Hastie's books. The deep learning chapter is just too brief to be useful. I with they cut these out and only included new insights.
Part I and some chapters from II and III are new. The comments about frequentist and Bayesian inference are illustrative. Same for James-Stein estimator. I was hoping for an update on bootstrap, but it's the same material, just with new presentation and simpler examples. All of this makes reading the book worthwhile.
The level of difficulty is similar to their other books. There are many examples and illustrations, but more could have been included for Bayesian multiple testing.

Horrible company and cheats

DO NOT! I REPEAT DO NOT RENT FROM AMAZON. I rented this book and right before finals the book expired so I had to re rent the book. When I call Amazon they said it was my fault that I did not know when it would expire. I also tried to contact Cengage Learning and they would not answer the phone so I do not think they will be of much help. Renting text books from amazon is a scam. If you dont want to be cheated out of your money go buy or rent from Chegg, but I repeat do not use Amazon. Horrible company and cheats.
