A touching look into the struggle of 70s revolutionaries.

This book offers an excellent, honest portrayal of the day to day reality of 70s black revolutionairies and it can be promised that once you begin reading, you will rush to the end.
This book takes you to the heart of the Black Power movement and is so intriguing because it is written by someone who lived, and died for a cause in which he believed.
So often books or studies that focus on this specific facet of the civil rights era dillute the reality of the moment, because they are writing from a mere spectator's point of view, rather than from the perspective of actual participants.
For this reason, this book should be a must read for anyone studying the Black Panther Party--if they want to know the principles, beliefs and hopes of the people.

In her engaging though sometimes preachy new book, Kingsolver recounts the year her family attempted to eat only what they could grow on their farm in Virginia or buy from local sources. The book's bulk, written and read by Kingsolver in a lightly twangy voice filled with wonder and enthusiasm, proceeds through the seasons via delightful stories about the history of their farmhouse, the exhausting bounty of the zucchini harvest, turkey chicks hatching and so on. In long sections, however, she gets on a soapbox about problems with industrial food production, fast food and Americans' ignorance of food's origins, and despite her obvious passion for the issues, the reading turns didactic and loses its pace, momentum and narrative. Her daughter Camille contributes recipes, meal plans and an enjoyable personal essay in a clear if rather monotonous voice. Hopp, Kingsolver's husband and an environmental studies professor, provides dry readings of the sidebars that have him playing Dr. Scientist, as Kingsolver notes in an illuminating interview on the last disc. Though they may skip some of the more moralizing tracks, Kingsolver's fans and foodies alike will find this a charming, sometimes inspiring account of reconnecting with the food chain.

Adult/High School–This book chronicles the year that Barbara Kingsolver, along with her husband and two daughters, made a commitment to become locavores–those who eat only locally grown foods. This first entailed a move away from their home in non-food-producing Tuscon to a family farm in Virginia, where they got right down to the business of growing and raising their own food and supporting local farmers. For teens who grew up on supermarket offerings, the notion not only of growing one's own produce but also of harvesting one's own poultry was as foreign as the concept that different foods relate to different seasons. While the volume begins as an environmental treatise–the oil consumption related to transporting foodstuffs around the world is enormous–it ends, as the year ends, in a celebration of the food that physically nourishes even as the recipes and the memories of cooks and gardeners past nourish our hearts and souls. Although the book maintains that eating well is not a class issue, discussions of heirloom breeds and making cheese at home may strike some as high-flown; however, those looking for healthful alternatives to processed foods will find inspiration to seek out farmers' markets and to learn to cook and enjoy seasonal foods. My annual springtime read!

This book has become my annual spring time read. Full of inspiration to melt the winter frost and begin my seedlings to put in the ground, prepare my beds and to make the words of her story come to life, albeit on a smaller scale, right in my own backyard. Discovering not only the delicious flavor of homegrown foods l, but also the gratification of growing my own and appreciation for the time and care that goes into food production. This book has reconnected me to my roots of gardening with my grandfather when I was a child and has awakened the slumbering farmer that has been in me my whole life. Highly recommend if you're ready to rethink food or reconnect with nature.

Delicious inspiration

Kingsolver invites us to her family's garden and table as they spend a year eating pretty much only what they or people they know in their area grow. I first read this years ago thanks to a book club suggestion, and I keep recommending it and buying more copies for friends who are interested in knowing more about sustainable living. The format works -- Kingsolver writes the main narrative, with her husband writing sidebars for facts and figures of the big picture of American agribusiness and her daughter writes recipe sidebars -- that are good, too! Chew on this book for a while, and you'll find yourself making different and more informed choices about your own food -- and, as Stephen assures us in one of his sidebars -- even one local meal a week for every American family would decrease fossil fuel use and increase local farmer -- and your own family's -- health.

GROW YOUR OWN FOOD

Growing up in the frugal, simpler times of the Depression, I was not unduly surprised by her suggestions or recipes. I doubt
that we can return to the days of the family farms and knowing where our foodstuffs come from. I applaud all efforts to
have people grow their own vegetable garden. The process gives so much satisfaction and gustatory rewards! There is
though, a limit to the time an ordinary working parent, especially, can give to the whole process.

I love this book

I love this book. I have been living in Italy for 13 years now and it was like listening to my Florentine mother-in-law's stories all over again. It has also been helpful in understanding the roles of women married to Florentine men no matter where they come from themselves. Interesting stories are told in a realistic way bringing World War II and the good times of the 1960s alive.

Why we love Florence and Tuscany

Have you ever wandered through a Florentine neighborhood before lunch, smelling indescribably good scents wafting through open windows, hearing families talk to each other, and wondering what it is they are doing, and what they are eating? If you have, this book is for you. Around the Tuscan Table is an endlessly interesting and very readable saga of how modern Florentine families and Florentine food have changed in the last few decades, rendering the mysterious stone streets and people of Florence infinitely more real for the traveler and Italophile. And this ethnography also provides great recipes for simple, tasty Florentine food; the straccoto recipe has become a family favorite. Straccoto is Italian pot roast, with the sauce served over pasta as a first course. It is delicious.

This book is a marvelous antidote to the endless up-market mythologizing of Tuscany. It seems that we simply can't get away from `Tuscany as the promised land' - a place where rich Brits and Americans can buy a farmhouse and pretend, a la Marie Antoinette, to be earth-grimed farmers - of artisanal olive oils. Tuscany has become a kind of iconic play-land for the wealthy and bored cosmopolitan. But what of the Tuscan people? As a frequent traveler to Tuscany, I am thrilled that this book has been published. For too long the writing of all things Tuscan has been from the perspective of the expatriate - the �migr� viewing a mythologized culture viewing the �migr�, with the Tuscan landscape and people somehow magically preserved in a state of 19th century splendor, or squalor, depending on the purse of the observing expat and the state of the `villa' she or he has purchased. Dr. Counihan's book provides us with a welcome picture of how Florentines live and eat - as well as some of the best and simplest recipes for home cooked Tuscan meals available.

Rather than assuming an unchanging social and physical landscape, Dr. Counihan chronicles the changes in place, attitudes, habits, and social relations over decades among the family of her ex-husband. Her training is in anthropology, and she is a well-known and highly-respected scholar of food and identity, so it is inevitable that her book should focus on food as a metaphor for social change through time. However, this is no dry anthropological tome, it is readable, interesting, and highly informative. By relying on the many years that she lived in Italy, married to an Italian, she is able to give us a picture of Italian life not available to many Americans. She also teaches us about food change - how prosperity has altered Italian habits and attitudes, and how Italians feel about the many changes their country has undergone since World War II. We, as outsiders and traveling Americans, often view the Italian people as somehow unchanging, unmoving in culture and tradition. Fantastically delicious

Counihan set out to examine Florentine foodways through interviews with twenty-three members of an extended family broken down into, an older generation, a middle generation, and a younger generation. Counihan lived in Italy from 1968-1984; she was immersed in the culture and more importantly immersed within the family portrayed in this book. She points out that anthropologists have paid little attention to Italy's rich and diverse urban culture. To recify this, she seeks to fill this gap in anthropological research by focusing on food to discuss Florentine identity, family, gender, history, culture, and society. Even though Counihan's book is geared toward fellow anthropologists her writing style is accessible to all. The book is easily read and understood, she also avoids using the technical jargon that is so common to academic writing and often quite confusing to people outside of the discipline.

This book is a fascinating portrayal of Florentine cuisine and culture from the perspective of ordinary citizens. Counihan's close relationship with the interviewee's allows for an intimate portrayal of the Florentine foodways through their food-based memories. The book is well-written, engaging, well researched, and most of all entertaining.

An enduring living biography on Squanto (Tisquantum)

This is a great living biography book about Tisquantum (Squanto). This book isn't a fairy tale story that most Squanto and Pilgrim books portray to us and our children. "This book relies on primary source documents of the period, and tells the story of the European scramble for expansion and colonization from a Native American point of view."

Squanto endured much hardship through his youth and adult life and yet, he was able to overcome and forgive those who stole his life and soul. He adopted the Mayflower pilgrims who moved onto his people's (Patuxet tribe of the Wampanoag) sacred ground after his entire Patuxet tribe died of a plague carried over from the old world. He taught the Mayflower pilgrims his people's heritage on surviving in the wilderness in which the Wampanoag people held sacred and loved so dearly.

Find out how Captain George Weymouth, Captain John Smith, Sir Ferdinando Gorges, England's King James I and VI of Scotland, Thomas Hunt, Thomas Dermer, Miles Standish, William Bradford and many other historical figures relate to Squanto's life story.

I was awed by Tisquantum's human spirit.

Squanto, a pivotal American citizen

The book was well researched as a historical classic yet read like a novel. It equally explained the Native American, British, Spanish and French cultures in the 1600s without bias. This is important because Squanto spent most of his life under British dominion and was a fluent English speaker. Once I started reading the book, I tried to put it down but could not. Thus, I read it in one day. This book should be a must read for anyone who wants to truly understand the Thanksgiving Holiday. Also, it faithfully followed the dynamic of the Christian faith on which our nation was founded yet without forcing the issue. Squanto was shown as the tragic victim he was, yet he overcame every obstacle through his relationship with Christ and the forgiveness he found for those who had deeply wronged him. I found the book extremely inspiring.

If you are seeking a book that teaches you SixSigma then this is not for you. The book summarizes all what you need to know about SixSigma and its tools but doesn't go deep.

Jan Just Keijser

Jan Just Keijser is an open source professional from Utrecht, the Netherlands. He has a wide range of experience in IT, ranging from providing user support, system administration, and systems programming to network programming. He has worked for various IT companies since 1989. Become an expert on deploying and administering OpenVPN network services

This book is targeted to system administrators willing to deploy an extra layer of security for his users or customers which need to access private infraestructures from the internet using OpenVPN software. This book it's written in plain language and goes straight to the point but a good knowledge on networking is advised to get the most out of the book. The book can be used as a complete guide to deploy the service from the ground or to strengthen security or fine tune already existing VPN scenarios. The book also gives recommendations on how to scale in the future and be aware of possible weaknesses of the system. In overall it's a very good source of information on this matter and I recommend it without any doubt.

A comprehensive book on OpenVPN. Recommended!

Finally a comprehensive and up-to-date book (Aug. 2015) on OpenVPN. The concepts and available options behind the implementation of virtual private networks using OpenVPN are well explained and worked out with several examples. The book is complete and self-contained. No previous knowledge on OpenVPN is required. Personally, I found Chapter 7 (Scripting and Plugins) extremely helpful: understanding the exact order in which all different scripts are executed is what helped me the most with the implementation of (powerful!) vpn solutions. The book has few typos in some of the worked out examples but they can easily be spotted out.

This is the go-to book for going from learning everything about OpenVPN. Not only that, but it walks you through the basics, it tells you what a VPN is, the types of VPNs, their pros and cons. This is the book for everyone looking into mastering OpenVPN, from the home user (setting it up in your own router, and using your mobile devices as clients) to the network admin (client/server setup).
