Review
"Those wishing to create engaging performance pieces from personal experiences will find this book useful."—Library Journal

"When you watch Margot Leitman telling stories onstage, you find yourself laughing hysterically and somehow feeling less alone in a world where it seems everyone else got some kind of instruction manual. And now she's literally gone and given you an instruction manual. She'sa former hypochondriac, obsessed with game shows, and asuperfan of hair metal—and she'll make you realize your own qualifications and credentials in no time. In a world of experts, you've found an insightful book about storytelling from an actual human."
—Dan Kennedy, host of The Moth storytelling podcast, and writer-performer

"Margot Leitman is a rare thing: she's a performer, a writer, and—in this book—the teacher you secretly have a crush on. Sharp as hell, Leitman teaches you how to tell your own story. Through sharing her process, telling personal stories, and giving practical exercises, she will give you the tools and confidence you need to share your story with the world."
—Elna Baker, author and regular contributor to This American Life

"For our improv show ASSSSCAT the success of the performance hinges on how meaty the story is that the monologist gives us. Margot always delivers a nice thick cut of filet mignon."
—Matt Besser, cofounder of Upright Citizens Brigade and author of The Upright Citizens Brigade Comedy Improvisation Manual

"Margot Leitman and Michael Jordan are both naturally good at storytelling/basketball. But they're not content to coast on their natural abilities; they also work at their craft/dunks. But where they differ is that Michael Jordan has retired and Margot Leitman continues to hone her formidable skills on the word processor/court. Long Story Short shows her at the top of her game/game."
—Rob Delaney, comedian and best-selling author

"Margot Leitman is not only an incredibly skilled and entertaining storyteller but also a gifted teacher. She is the person you most want next to you around a campfire, at a grungy bar, or cheering you on at your first PowerPoint presentation. In Long Story Short, Margot expertly guides readers through the ins and outs of a craft essential to all who seek to connect more deeply with the world around them."
—Jillian Lauren, New York Times bestselling author of Some Girls: My Life in a Harem

"Whether you know it or not, there are great stories inside of you, and Margot Leitman is the perfect person to help you find them and squeeze every drop of humor and emotion out of them when you do. Long story short, she rules. Buy this book."
—DC Pierson, author of The Boy Who Couldn't Sleep and Never Had To

"Margot Leitman is hilarious and vulnerable and real. In Long Story Short, she teaches us, with great candor and clarity, how storytelling works. This book is essential—a reminder that the world would be a better place if everyone knew how to tell a good story."
—Diana Spechler, author and seven-time Moth StorySLAM winner

Margot Leitman is The Doula of Storytelling
By NStephens
Margot's book takes the anxiety of storytelling away from anxious, navel-gazing people. It also alleviates the pain for the audience who may have to listen to a long boring story. This book is good for performers, creatives and for business people who need guidance on to make a story compelling. You will kill at parties and conferences after you read this book.

A Long Story That Could Have Been Made Shorter
By rampageous_cuss
"...when the story is a really silly one, and you add high stakes on top of deep passion, hilarity ensues."

There's a point towards the end of this book where the author talks about writing down your story, setting it aside for a day or two, then performing it for a friend. Then you ask the friend: was the story relateable? Easy to follow? Could you keep characters straight? Did you root for the narrator? It's not quite an encapsulation of the lessons (which are listed on page 234), but close to it. I think there should be something like that at the BEGINNING of the book.

This squarish paperback is nearly 300 pages long, and rambles around some worthwhile ideas, but very little struck me as particularly new or original. However good the basic advice may be, it's buried in a lot of unnecessary prose and fancy design. Margot Leitman is actually a somewhat amusing writer so this isn't as bad as it might be, but the organization should be better and she should get to her points faster and with a lot less verbiage - which ironically is one of the key lessons of the workbook!

This is a kinda-sorta workbook, with a number of exercises in it to get you thinking about your stories - the book almost starts out by getting you to write down self-descriptions and examining them. Leitman's main point is that the stories you tell should be yours - she asserts that true stories about yourself will be the most engaging, and you'll have an easier time carrying a story off if you come across as sincere and largely truthful.

I'm not sure what to say about her storytelling tips. Leitman's recommendation of having a "Point of Entry;" an opening that allows the audience to identify with you, sounds good. She talks plot, and says that while your story should allow your audience to identify a "Universal Theme," it shouldn't be spelled out or tagged as a moral; it's more important that the story move the audience in SOME way than that you tell them they way it OUGHT to move them. She asserts that the story should be told with passion, but also with perspective; you should be the star of the story but ideally be an underdog with flaws the audience can identify with; your reaction to what happens is key.

There are a few tips (a VERY few) here for memorizing and vocalizing, and although Leitman recommends written preparation she makes an interesting point about recognizing the difference between the performed and written word - she recommends being conversational, which sounds right to me. And the story should complete a full circle of some sort, which seems to me to be the way she should have organized the book...

Ultimately, this workbook is all about telling one, particular kind of story - a personal one. It's not the only storytelling guide you'll ever need; it could be better, but it's better than nothing. Oh, and she mentions a very important element of ANY story - be sure to throw in something unexpected!

Tell Your Story
By Errol
So, I really should have read the book information a little more carefully, but I’m so glad I didn’t !! My normal pace is to scream through life at a million miles per hour, which is how I skimmed the review of Long Short Story.

I was really after a book to help my writing, so ‘the only storytelling guide you’ll ever need’ was just what I wanted. However, this book with the mantra of “Tell your story” is way better. What I really love is how through an approach, obviously based on hard-won experience, I have become a much better observer of life. I’m now always looking for the characters, the situations, the plots so building and reworking a narrative to create the story.

This skill is relevant in so many areas, including business, education or home-life, so that people, engage with you as a person, buy into the story and want to work with you.

I’ll be honest, my intention was never to learn how to be a stand-up storyteller, but now having read the book (finished in next to no time) I’m actively looking to find an open-mike event to give story-telling a go.
