About the Author
Kevin Moore is the editor of the world's largest Cuban music website, www.timba.com, and the author of the popular "Tom�s Cruz Conga Method", a 3-volume series published by Mel Bay Publications, available on amazon.com, and used as textbook at various colleges and educational institutions. Kevin also produced, co-wrote, and played on the salsa CD "Salsa Gitana", available at latinpulsemusic.com. The CD reached the semi-final level in the 1998 Grammy Award process. The author has also written several "online books" on various aspects of Cuban music, available for free as a public service on www.timba.com.

Beyond Salsa Piano: The Cuban Timba Piano Revolution: Vol. 1: Beginning - The Roots of the Piano Tumbao (Volume 1)
Volume 4 explores the decade leading up to the collapse of the Berlin Wall - a political event which had cultural repercussions around the world, not least in Cuba where a hitherto dependency on Soviet aid would soon be replaced by a struggle to survive without it. The book looks at the increasingly flexible instrumentation of the modern conjuntos and charangas which became a breeding ground for the music to come a decade later. Already there were elements of timba style emerging in the piano tumbaos of this period, arising from the desire of pianists to escape from the constant repackaging of the same old ideas. This volume introduces the idea of `learning a series of interchangeable variations on the same tumbao in order to develop the skill of "controlled improvisation"' - a device which is essential to the playing of timba piano, and something which a few salsa piano players could learn a trick or two from.

Great Information.

Volume IV concludes the review of the roots of Timba, covering the eighties. The many tumbao examples include Rumbavana, Son 14, Adalberto Alvarez, Maravilla de Florida (with Manolito Simonet, pre-Trabuco), Orquesta Aliam�n, And Elio Rev�. The many tumbaos of Manolito Simonet are worth the price of admission alone. The important concept of controlled improvisation is elaborated on. There is harmonic analysis throughout, as well as an appendix with harmonic charts and exercises. As with all the volumes, audio examples are available separately for download.
I've been working with Cuban music for over ten years now with my band Mamborama, and I can unequivocally state that this series of books is far away the finest available.

This book would be worth it for the accurate, note-for-note transcriptions alone. Add to it Moore's analytical skills and ability to write in a down to earth level and you've got a must have for any fan of Cuban music interested in understanding the vast and complex world of Cuban piano.
