The Apostolic Congregation: Church Growth Reconceived for a New Generation, by George G. III Hunter

A church in the heart of Manhattan and a congregation among the Inuit people of Northern Canada would seem to have little in common with one another. Yet in one way they are surprisingly similar: They are both apostolic congregations, churches whose every program exists for the purpose of presenting the gospel to non-Christians, and making disciples of Jesus Christ. What is the secret of churches like these; how have they learned to make evangelism central to everything they do? In studying apostolic congregations around the world, George G. Hunter III has discovered a set of perspectives and practices that they all share. With the passion and insight for which he is so well known, Hunter demonstrates how your congregation can learn to focus on the one thing that most matters: bringing people into a saving relationship with Jesus Christ.

Evangelism in the 21st Century
By Michael Jones
This book both summarizes and develops the teaching of the Church Growth Movement for a new generation. The author is heavily indebted to Donald McGavran, who did extensive field research to find out why some churches were more effective at reaching people with the Gospel than others. Hunter urges readers to look at North America as a mission field, claiming that the United States is now third largest pagan nation in the world. If we are going to reach this country for Christ, then we must seriously rethink our methods, because they are not working. Most churches today have plateaued or are declining. We have not been effectual at making converts (I have seen this in my own church--even though we have grown, most of it has been transfer growth).

Hunter writes with wit and acumen about not only church growth, but other related fields, such as sociology, communication theory and psychology. His mastery of the material is impressive, dropping pregnant thoughts into virtually every paragraph of the book--my copy is marked up unlike any other book I have read recently. He does have a tendency to repeat himself at times, however. For instance, in the introduction he tells a story of his early ministry in Santa Monica, California (xv). But then he tells the same story again in chapter six (93). Instances like this give the book a certain "stream of consciousness" feel. The macro organization seems to be lacking a bit. I am guessing that these are a collection of lectures and papers that he has presented in other contexts, and then stitched together to make a book. But that really is a quibble and does not detract from the impact of his ideas, which are seminal.

A weightier critique involves the virtual lack of Scripture and theology. Hunter has asked the question "What works?" not necessarily the question of "What does the Bible have to say about this?" As such, the book has a pragmatic feel throughout. One gets the impression that the church grows by adherence to a certain sociological approach rather than by God's Word, prayer and dependence upon the Holy Spirit. It is not as though Hunter eschews these--he gives lip service to them. But by the end of the book, it seems like he is relying too much on a man-centered approach. Note, for instance, the way he refers to non-Christians as "pre-Christians," whereas the Bible defines our pre-Christ state as "enemies" of God (Rom 5:10), "sons of disobedience" (Eph 2:2), "children of wrath" (Eph 2:3), "dead in our trespasses" (Eph 2:5), etc. If a reader already has a robust theology, then they will find much here that is helpful as they try to refine their church's sense of mission. If not, they might want to balance out this book with Gary McIntosh's Biblical Church Growth: How You Can Work with God to Build a Faithful Church, or a good study on the Acts of the Apostles, such as the one that is available from Redeemer Presbyterian in Manhattan.

I recommend Hunter's Apostolic Congregation for pastors, church planters, missiologists and lay leaders who are concerned for the future of the church in America.

A Commentary On the Current Church
By Matthew Morine
This was an excellent book from the church growth stream of thought. Of course you will not agree with everything, and why would you. There are some lines of thought that go against the gospel, but there are some insights in this book that are excellent. This book is interesting because mostly all of church growth material is out of favor in the Christian world. It is called missional or nothing, which is interesting because some are even calling for an end to missional, which proves the point to not chase fads, but always stay within the word. But this book bridges some of the missional thoughts with some of the church growth thoughts. It is a blended program, which is helpful for established congregations. The author is well versed in church growth, and notes that which is still working in churches today. This is a really a good read for church leaders. It talks about some of the paradigms of church people, and how they hold churches back. It notes that which is most beneficial to church growing, which is simply planning. It talks about the internally focused churches, and how churches can developed a greater desire to reach the lost. Mostly the book is packed with insight into how churches function, and what will help them and what will hurt them. The book is mostly a running line of thought into some of the common methods and practices of churches from the attractional churches to the missional churches. This is definitely a interesting insight into the current church culture.

My Pen Ran Out of Ink

All the pastors on our staff (The Journey Church in New York City) are reading this book right now. It's the best summary of classic church growth thinking that I've seen in at least a decade. And Professor Hunter is just the guy to do it. He cuts through a lot of what people `think' about church growth to give us the straight forward truth (including the most current research to date). Odd as it is to say, his footnotes are worth the price of the book. Buy the footnotes and you get a no-fluff, all meat church growth handbook thrown in for free. My pen literally ran out of ink as I marked up this book. Every pastor who is serious about church growth and evangelism should read (and mark up) this book.
