About the Author
Aslam Kassimali is Professor of Civil Engineering at Southern Illinois University. He teaches structural engineering, nonlinear structural analysis, and structural dynamics and stability. Consistently recognized for teaching excellence, Dr. Kassimali has received 19 awards for outstanding teaching at the department and the college level since joining Southern Illinois University-Carbondale in 1980. In 1996 he was named the Outstanding Teacher of the entire university, and in 2004 he was awarded the title of Distinguished Teacher. Professor Kassimali completed undergraduate work at the University of Karachi in Pakistan in 1969, earned a master's degree from Iowa State University in 1971, and masters and doctoral degrees from the University of Missouri, Columbia, in 1974 and 1976 respectively.

Good Structural Book Reference

This book was required for my Adv. Indeterminate Structures course. Does a good job with material. My only thing is that I do not like it when very complicated problems say "and solving gives you" and has the answer. I like to see the "and solving" worked out... especially when it's double integral, differentials, etc. It would help refresh my memory from way back in the math courses.

Good Reading

This book is used in one of my classes. Mainly because my teacher wrote it. However, the book is written in a way that is easily understood, and the examples are broken nicely.

A Fantastic Book...and a word of caution.

Bad news first:

I found this book a little difficult to get into for a couple of reasons. One, I am not at all familiar with landscape of Egypt. Second, although I am marrying an Egyptian, and have somewhat of a familiarity for Arabic names, it was still a bit confusing to keep track of each of the characters -- especially with most of them having a nickname or title attached to their name in various parts of the story. I found myself having to back track during the first 30 or so pages to keep each character straight, which was a bit frustrating for a seasoned reader with a supposedly high comprehension level. I know, I know: what should I expect from a book translated from Arabic, about Arabic people, and taking place in an Arabic world? Still, I thought that it merited a warning...

Good news:

This was still an absolutely gripping novel. For those like me who may struggle with the names or places and get a bit frustrated in the initial pages, the story is well worth it. I was soon immersed in the lives of the characters, and began to care for them as if I knew them personally. I was able to relate it to what I know of Egyptian culture, and it opened my eyes to aspects of the culture which I have not personally seen.

In the larger scope of things, it really makes you think about the political/religious/ethnic and just general social issues that surround us. It allows one to think outside of the box and experience a life or lives that you ordinarily would not be able to. Although very sad in parts, it also contained great happiness, and allows you to truly see a beautiful culture at its best, at its worst, at its most twisted, and at its most innocent. A very honest, and very enthusiastic 5 stars.

Present Egypt in contrast to tolerant Egypt my family knew and loved

As a daughter of parents that were born and grew up in the flourishing Jewish community of Cairo and Alexandria in the years 1920-1951, and who loved Egypt and the Egyptians, it is sad to read how the society has changed after the revolution, and how the authorities are insensitivity to the lower class people. A society where it is almost impossible to move to a better social class. It is sad to read about the cruelty of people to their dear ones, the spread of corruption almost everywhere, and the rise of extreme Islamic movements. The book is well written and well translated as one can truly feel the atmosphere and the feelings of different social classes. I find the book to be moving mainly because it is written by a native of Egypt .

This is one of those books that comes along once in a great while and has the power to take over one's life for the week or so it takes to read through the book completely. The characters are likeable and relatable, the plot both surprising and inevitable, and the writing is poetic and foreign in a beautiful and intriguing way. Recommended.

Robert Specht is my grandfather

For my 13 birthday I was given a copy of "Tisha". I loved it! Not just because grandfather wrote it but because it is an inspiring story. The librarian and my teacher were very surprised to find out who I am. Everyone loves this book. It was written a long time ago, but is still read by adults and their children. When people travel to Chicken Alaska they buy the book and then they write a fan letter. My grandfather died 3 years ago. I am proud of his work.

This is a great account of how early life in Alaska truly was. My father mined with Fred Purdy from the late 30's till the war broke out and he enlisted. After he married my Mother they moved back to Chicken and my Mother became a close friend to Anne. While Fred and Anne adopted other children over the years they always had a house full of everyone else's children too, a sign of their loving and open nature. The flavor of this book reflects the bias of the "Outsiders" to the local natives that still runs uneasily under a more modern and progressive time.

In 1927 young Anne Hobbs goes to Alaska to be a teacher and to have an adventure. Having no family left in Colorado, she seeks to do something special as her beloved grandmother predicted she would. She finds life difficult because of inclement weather and a lack of conveniences, but the biggest problem she faces is that of prejudice. She seeks to teach and befriend all of the people in the small town of Chicken, Alaska, where she lives but she soon discovers that her kindness towards Indian children raises the ire of the white people in the town. She has to face up to the local school board and the town's people before she is allowed to teach Indians in her school. As if that isn't bad enough she ends up falling in love with a "half-breed" and adopting some mixed-race children. This book is full of adventure and real insight into what it was like to live in Alaska in the 20's. It is also a triumphant story of one woman's love and her persistance in encouraging justice in her small Alaska town.

About the Author

Wolfgang Streeck is Professor of Sociology and Director at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies in Cologne, Germany. Previously he was a Senior Research Fellow at the Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin. From 1988 to 1995 he was Professor of Sociology and Industrial Relations at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has worked on labor relations, political economy, economic policy, European integration and related subjects. He was President of the Society for the Advancement of Socio-Economics (SASE) in 1998-99. Kathleen Thelen is Professor of Political Science at Northwestern University. She is the author, most recently, of How Institutions Evolve: The Political Economy of Skills in Germany, Britain, the United States and Japan (Cambridge University Press, 2004). Her work on labor politics and on historical institutionalism has appeared in World Politics, Comparative Political Studies, The Annual Review of Political Science, Politics & Society, and Comparative Politics, among others. She is currently Chair of the Council for European Studies, and serves on the Executive Councils of the Organized Sections for Comparative Politics, Qualitative Methods, and European Politics and Society of the American Political Science Association.
