About the Author

Christopher D. Moyes received his Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of British Columbia in the area of comparative muscle physiology. After postdoctoral fellowships in molecular physiology at the U.S. National Institutes of Health and Simon Fraser University, he took a position at Queen's University, where he is an associate professor in the Department of Biology. He teaches a spectrum of courses in cell biology and animal physiology, while continuing to pursue his research interests in molecular physiology and biochemistry.

Chris is a recipient of the Premier's Research Excellence Award. He is a member of the American Physiological Society and The Canadian Society of Zoologists and has served on the Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada grant panel for Animal Biology. He is also a member of the Editorial Board of Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology. He has published more than 60 peer-reviewed papers, including contributions to four books. Among his recent papers are Moyes, C.D., and D.L. Hood (2003) "Origins and consequences of mitochondrial variation in vertebrate muscle," Annual Review of Physiology 65: 177-201 and Moyes, C.D. (2003) "Controlling muscle mitochondrial content," Journal of Experimental Biology 206: 4285-4391.

Patricia M. Schulte received her Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from Stanford University in the area of evolutionary physiology focusing on the role that changes in gene expression play in evolution. She is currently an assistant professor in the Department of Zoology at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, where she teaches animal physiology and evolutionary physiology and runs an active research program. Using several species of fish as model systems, her research group is particularly focused on the relationship between genetic variation, performance differences, and fitness in a changing environment. She also conducts research into applied questions relating to fisheries, aquaculture, and aquatic toxicology.

Trish is a recipient of the Premier's Research Excellence Award and several teaching awards, including the UBC Science Undergraduate Society Award for Excellence in Teaching. Trish is a member of the Canadian Society of Zoologists and the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology. She is an associate editor for the scientific journal Physiological and Biochemical Zoology.

She has published more than 30 peer-reviewed papers, including two book chapters. Among her recent papers are DeKoning, A. B. L., D.J. Picard, S.R. Bond, and P.M. Schulte (2004) "Stress and interpopulation variation in glycolytic enzyme expression in a teleost fish, Fundulus heteroclitus," and P.M. Schulte (2003) "Na+/K+-ATPase alpha-isoform switching in gills of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) during salinity transfer," Journal of Experimental Biology 206: 4475-4486.

Well Written, Highly Approachable Physiology Textbook

I used this textbook for an intro level animal physiology class. Overall the book is very well written and approachable. Concepts are laid out simply and in an easy to follow format. If you are looking for a detailed look at underlying mechanisms than this book is not for you --but this isn't the focus of physiology as a discipline. Physiology is concerned with the larger relationship between biological structure and function. For instance, why cardiac cells are different from skeletal muscle. In this regard, the book is quite excellent.

This Textbook Is Incredible!!!

I took a killer physiology class and didn't want to buy the latest edition of the textbook because it was way out of my price range. I ended up buying this one and I am so glad I did. This book is incredible for anyone taking a physiology class, especially one that requires it. I hate reading textbooks and much prefer learning from the professor but I found this book easy to read and very very informative. It has the information you need in a format that is interesting so you can actually finish a chapter without falling asleep. I highly recommend this textbook!!!

Disturbing. Outstanding!

Disclaimer: I know the author personally.

If I were a Bollywood hero, at this time I should've been in India, trying to trace the author in one of his many book launch events, with the sole purpose of avenging the trauma his book caused my wife. But hero, I'm not. So, I'm at my laptop at quarter past two in the morning, writing this review, while my wife is sleeping next to me, perhaps being haunted by images from the same book in her nightmares. Shameful.

Actually the only word that truly describes the book is repulsive. Perhaps revolting also fits the bill. Yes, the famous humour blogger and author of MIHYAP has come up with the kind of stuff that leaves a terrible stench in the mouth. And from what I understand, that, precisely is what he set out to do in this makeover second book.

'The Mine' is a horror story, but not along the lines of 'Zee Horror Show' or 'Andheri Raat Mein Diya Tere Haath Mein', which of course you'll perhaps associate more with the author. However, in this book Arnab almost makes it a point to not have a single line that can make you smile, leave alone laugh. Through the story of an assorted cast of characters with a past, brought together at 'The Mine', where funny things are going on, we are brought face to face with a different kind of horror, that lies deep within ourselves. The kind that we can't even dare to accept while introspecting. In case I give an impression that it's a philosophical novel which asks you to look into your heart and listen to your parents (I love K3G) I am doing it completely wrong. Think of any sort of macabre grossness and you will find it in the pages of 'The Mine'. Some parts of the book are so explicit in its gory details that I felt uncomfortable to talk to him after reading the book knowing what his fertile imagination is capable of cooking up! If you're thinking of sweeping that girl you've been fancying for sometime by gifting a copy of this on the day of Saint Valentine's feast, consider yourself warned.

I personally have always felt that Arnab is a far superior writer while tackling serious issues and topics and his thorough research for so many of his blog posts have helped me and others to understand many complicated world issues in a very personalized and descriptive fashion. 'The Mine' is the epitome of his serious, focused, researched and nuanced writing.

I don't want to give away any part of the story, even inadvertently, because I feel the very essence of the book is in facing the unexpected and is best enjoyed by going in with no preconceived notion, besides being ready to bear some very hard hitting ideas.

It takes immense courage to present oneself, so early in one's career, in a completely different shade from what the audience expects and then to shock them with the kind of negativity and gore as is there in the book.

So much more than a thriller.

So I finally got to read "The Mine". It has been a long wait since the preview of the book and a painful one, thanks to the early release in India. These past few months, I watched from the sidelines as all the chosen ones read it, savored it (mostly) and reviewed it in `mind-blowing' and `unputdownable' terms. Not known to have an appetite for horror, I was initially a bit hesitant, read scared, to enter the Mine. So I started reading it on a crowded public bus on a bright sunny afternoon, hoping that the presence of other humans will keep all ghosts at bay. But who knew that halfway through the book, I would start looking at humanity in a new light and almost crave the company of ghosts?

The book is of course an excellent read. Ray's style is fast-paced and meticulous at the same time: no small detail is left unattended yet not a word feels superfluous. Being able to capture the import and the essence of a wide spectrum of situations- from communal riots to Kolkata winter afternoons, from the devil's lair to domestic bliss, with such precision using just the right amount of words, is no mean feat. Same with his characters- in few masterstrokes he presents to us people so real that we can almost anticipate the moments when one of them would roll their eyes or would purse their lips when reacting to a certain situation.

The real fun, though, begins after the book is over. That is when you start asking yourself all kinds of questions, the answers to which you don't want to know. You become aware how you, like the characters in the novel, are just a nobody suspended in an emulsion of life watching helplessly as virtues and vices mix into each other and then separate out in moments, only to become inseparable once again. As Ray's characters make their way through the mine, they seem to battle blood and gore, traps and trials, but what are they really battling? Their mine seems to be no different from my mine, from all of our mines, where we forge ahead everyday, battling mistrust and hate with solidarity and empathy. And we make wrong turns. Even on perfectly well-lit paths.

No one expects a thriller to initiate a deep, philosophical evaluation (or at least a consideration) of one's worldview, but in the greatest twist of all, "The Mine" does exactly that.

Not very good...

I am a fan of Martin Popoff, and I was expecting great things from this book, but it is unable to deliver, unfortunately. The book names the most influential metal acts of the 70s, 80s, and 90s, summing up their careers in two or three pages. Sounds great, but the whole system just proves to be extremely boring, and the book is not designed to be a straight through read as I thought it would be (this was acceptable, obviously, with another Popoff book 'The Collector's Guide to Heavy Metal'). The book overall leaves me feeling unsatisfied, exactly the opposite reaction I thought it would give. I must also mention that the book leaves out Husker Du, who I feel several of the grunge bands (Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam) are heavily indebted to.

Excellent, Perhaps Short Overview

I'm not a big fan of Popoff's writing style, but he does have a good ear for the metal scene. I found myself agreeing with a lot of what he wrote. Also, when he breaks down the bands by decade, it's pretty obvious that the metal world is in decline when Pantera is considered the most influential band of the 90's (although I dig their stuff).

Practical approaches regularly adopted for mass production but also emerging ones are discussed. The topics treated have in many cases general validity and found application also in alternative display technologies (OLEDs, Electrophoretic Displays, etc.).

Liquid Crystal Display Drivers�is not only a reference for engineers and system integrators, but it is written also for scientific researchers, educators and students. About the Author

David Joseph Roger Cristaldi�graduated in Electronics Engineering at the University of Catania in 2005. In his thesis, developed at STMicroelectronics, he studied low-power design methodologies for liquid crystal display drivers. In 2006 he obtained the Italian qualification for the engineer profession and in the same year he was admitted to the Ph.D. course in Electronics Engineering, Automation Engineering, and Control of Complex Systems. His current research activity concerns analysis and modeling of electromagnetic-interference effects on Sigma-Delta analog-to-digital converters. Dr. Cristaldi received the Ph.D. degree in 2009.

Salvatore Pennisi�received the laurea degree in electronic engineering in 1992 and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering in 1997, both from the University of Catania. He joined in 1996 the Department of Electrical Electronics and Systems Engineering (DIEES), University of Catania, as an Assistant Professor and he was appointed an Associate Professor in 2002. Since then, he has been engaged in scientific projects in collaboration with national and international academic and industrial partners. His main research interests include circuit theory and analog design with emphasis on low-voltage and current-mode techniques. In this field, he has developed several building blocks and unconventional architectures of operational amplifiers. More recently, his research activities have involved multi-stage amplifiers with related frequency compensation, data converters and the analysis of high-frequency distortion in analog circuits such as feedback amplifiers, oscillators and filters. He published over 60 papers in international journals and more than 120 contributions in conference proceedings, he is the co-author of the books CMOS Current Amplifiers (1999) and Feedback Amplifiers: Theory and Design (2001), both edited by Kluwer Academic Publishers, and has written an entry in the Wiley Encyclopedia of Electrical and Electronics Engineering. Dr. Pennisi is senior member of the IEEE since 2004 and is a member of the IEEE CAS Analog Signal Processing Technical Committee. He currently serves as an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems-Part II: Express Briefs.

Francesco Pulvirenti graduated in Electronic Engineering at the University of Pisa, Italy, in 1989. After the military service, he joined STMicroelectronics, Castelletto (Milan) site, in 1991 and then he moved to Catania site in 1993. He started working in the Industrial and Peripheral Division developing Smart Power ICs for Industrial Applications, Linear Regulators, Switching Mode Power Supply and Power Management for Industrial, Mobile Phone, Battery Charger and Computer Applications. In 2001 he moved to Display segment to manage the design of new Drivers dedicated to Liquid Crystal Display Applications for portable equipments and in 2004 he was appointed Design Director of the Display Division. Since 2007 he is working in the Industrial and Power Conversion Division to define and develop new products for Photovoltaic Applications and he is currently managing a team of about 30 people as Business Unit Director. Francesco Pulvirenti holds 32 patents on Analog and Smart Power ICs in the USA, he has 4 patents pending and he is also author or co-author of 8 papers on full custom ICs.
