Love, at Bat

Once again, Tom Mendicino pulls his readers in like a warm, protective arm around the shoulder, and makes you listen and read without stopping to catch a breath. With total honesty, humor, and completely believable characters, KC, at Bat is the wry and beautiful coming-of-age love story of two young men who learn the hard way Pascal's adage that the heart "has reasons which reason knows nothing of." Charlie Beresford, indie music lover, scrawny writer-in-waiting, pre-Dartmouth College, and post-Augustinian Academy gets a job as a lowest-rung "sausage" -- an assistant with a moving van company. There, amid the fracas and fumes of the rough crew, he is joined by KC Conroy, baseball golden boy high school hero of the Little League, and fellow Augustinian. Powerfully built, handsome, and always playing Ricky Nelson songs, KC is the complete opposite of Charlie. And you know what opposites do. They fall in love. Mendicino's novel captures every scent, glance, kiss, coupling, semen shot, and pure rambunctious act of youth the two boys experience as they head towards each other, and, inevitably, away. As Charlie and KC map each other's emotions, Mendicino never takes his readers for granted -- this may be a story about young love, but it has at its heart a compelling adult intuition. Populated with supporting characters that also move the story forward (in particular, Charlie's cancer-stricken mother, and KC's grandfather), I read the book in one sitting, enthralled. This is one of the best gay works of fiction for adults and young adults alike. As in his previous work, "Probation", Tom Mendicino presents characters who are artfully off-kilter, and shows them to us as they become self-aware, and artfully -- if sometimes painfully -- the best of themselves. A page-turner in the best sense, this book celebrates the idea that love in all its forms is often not only the best chance we take, but the best risk we share. With KC, at Bat, Mendicino hits a home run.

Home run!

I found this title on Tom Webb's blog for favorite books from 2013, so I thought I'd give it a try, being a baseball fan. So glad I did. Realistic story, good writing, opposites attract, good characters. Semi Spoiler alert.......
If you require your stories to have happy ever after endings, then this is not the choice for you. I tend to like HEA endings, but this is more realistic and left a mark on me after I finished...even hoping there would be a sequel to resolve issues. However, since I was hooked on this author now, i searched his other works and saw that he had written Probation, which I had read in softcover 4 or so years ago. Grittier, realistic ending in that as well. Try this book!

KC Hits a Home Run

Tom Mendicino is back with "KC, at Bat," a great novella about one summer in the lives of two unlikely friends (and eventual lovers), KC and Charlie. They're just out of high school but worlds apart in terms of life experience. Mendicino is able to convincingly capture the intense nature of first love conducted in the closet, as well as sketch out life on the margins of the American Dream. His understandings of the nuances of family relationships are subtle, sophisticated, and powerful. His two leads are three-dimensional and the reader winds up rooting for them, wondering what adulthood will bring them. Do we need a sequel, as other reviewers wish? Perhaps...but I would argue that this compact novella does exactly what it's supposed to. Please read it.
